How to Start a Journaling Practice

Developing a journaling practice is key to building self-awareness and uncovering your potential. It allows you to reflect on your life, document your personal growth, and increase your emotional intelligence, and it can also help you relieve stress. If you are determined to get to know yourself more intimately and to start taking steps in your life that are rooted in purpose and intention, the following tips can help you build your journaling habit today:

1. Choose the right journaling platform for you

There is no one right way to journal, so choose the method that works best for you. You can freewrite in a notebook, use dated journals, or even download digital guided journals. Going digital not only decreases physical clutter, but it can also make daily reflection more accessible. Whether it is in the comfort of your home or any other time you have a moment to yourself, you can open any of your devices and answer prompts that guide you towards a better version of yourself.

2. Start small and make it simple

Journaling does not have to be overly complicated or time-consuming. Spending just five minutes doing self-reflection every day can change your life, so don’t overthink the process or put pressure on yourself. You don’t even have to use perfect spelling or grammar. Remember that you’re doing this for you – all you need to be is open and honest.

3. Pick a time in the day that is most convenient for writing

Journaling first thing in the morning can help you start your day with more clarity, and doing it right before bed can ease your thoughts before you head to sleep. Think about when in the day it might be most beneficial for you to be more centered – it can even be in the middle of the day! Once you know what time is best for you, try to be consistent with showing up so that you can start building the habit.

4. Find journal prompts

Digging deeper into who we are requires us to ask the right questions, and we might not always know what to ask ourselves in order to do this. Luckily, journals like the Dig Deeper and Better Every Day journals are filled with prompts that can help you reflect on several themes in your life such as purpose, love, and self-care, and healing.

5. Get an accountability partner

Though journaling is a personal practice, it doesn’t have to be a solo or completely private one. You can connect with one or more people to exchange writing prompts, and if you feel comfortable enough, you can share your thoughts. You never know how much you can discover about yourself by having conversation with other people, so join a community that makes self-discovery feel like a collective experience. `
